Putting together a cover....

The Sequential Arts Club is something that Brandon McKinney and I are organizing for the Art Institute of Tampa's students.
Below are some images from the design process. I began with a very rough sketch showing placement and layout. I very much wanted our 8" x 10" flyer to catch someone's attention - and what better way than an old skool comic book cover. With the layout in mind, I then sent it over to Brandon and Dave Lanphear for review. Dave will be handling the logo (it will most likely be different than what you see here), and Brandon provided the pencils and inks to his character and those wacky ninjas. I provided a 'Super Krishna' version - which I digitally inked and integrated into Brandon's scanned image.

From there it was a matter of figuring out what colors would work best. I went with 'loud' colors - because I want this thing to get people's attention. :)

The last image is not the final image - I was itching to finish the cover before getting Dave's logo - so I threw something together to see how the overall composition would look.

This is a small sketch is a small section of the first AiTA Sequential Arts club poster that I'll be collaborating with both Brandon McKinney and Dave Lanphear.

PCW #966 - 968

Here are the latest sketches for the past week. The line-up features a subtle insertion of Gabe from Penny Arcade, which is
easily one of the best drawn webcomics I've come across.

more sketches: 1-3-07

Here's the last from today's batch of doodles...

Sketches: 1-03-07

Here are some sketches I drew today, using a Papermate pen. These are excellent pens for doodling and sketching.
These sketches were cut and pasted from various sheets of paper.

PCW # 963 - 965: Sketches!

I had fun revisiting these toons. The concept sketches represent a vigorous reworking of PCW #28, #50 and #161, respectively.

At long last, the next incarnation of the PC Weenies website (dubbed PCW 5.0) is now up.

New Glasses: inked and colored

Voila! Bob's new look. He's traded up from a square frame to something that fits him better.

Bob Weiner's new make-over

Over the 8 years that I have drawn him, Bob has undergone a gradual evolution of sorts. The last vestige of his 'original' look are his glasses. I've decided to update his specs to streamline his look even more. This modification came about a few days ago when I began experimenting with the notion of animating Bob using Flash. (I'll try to post some of those tests in the weeks ahead.)

The second version down in the sketch above is Bob's new look. The third one was drawn purely for fun - to show folks that Bob indeed has eyes behind his glasses. Ironically, I never knew what Bob's eyes really looked like until a few months ago.

Sketch: vehicles

I've always been horrible at drawing vehicles. I think its because I've always struggled with perspective. I'm trying to get better at both. Here are some recent attempts that I worked through in my sketchbook today.

PCW #957 - 959

Here are the sketches for Toons 957, 958 and 959. For Toon #959, I have posted a small digital inking demo.

Pen and Inks: Pam

I drew this a few minutes back. Again, not too happy with the inks, but I need the practice.

Traditional inks again...

Thought I'd give it another go with traditional inking...

Bob: Traditional inks

It's been several years since I attempted to hand ink my own pencils. I'm not very good at it, to be quite honest. Nonetheless, I've decided to take another stab at it with the image of Bob you see below, which I drew a few minutes ago.

Sketches for 12-7-06

A few sketches I drew yesterday afternoon....

PCW # 951 - 954

A big update today, because once again, I'm running a bit behind. PCW #954 and # 955 underwent changes from what you see in the sketches above. The others stayed true, more or less, to their final versions.

Pushing the poses...

My drawings are too flat. I need to really stretch things out and move those masses around. Here's a warm-up page from my sketchbook where I've started to focus on that.

A page from my sketchbook

I drew this during class today. The students were busy in the studio, and I couldn't let the opportunity go to waste without drawing something. Here it is, warts and all.

#950!

That means 50 more toons till the big 1-0-0-0! Yesterday's toon received the largest traffic to the site yet. Slowly but surely, word must be getting out. Woohoo!

PCW #947 - #950

I've updated the old Blogger template with something a bit more ... classic. Hope you like the new look. Anyway, these sketches were the basis for the toons of the past week. I've added the bonus #950 with this batch to make up for my lateness in posting. Many of the small elements in my sketches never make it into the finalized version. Like the 'W33NI3' prisoner tag in toon #947. And speaking of toons, #948 features PCW guest star Justin Rollins - he will be receiving the original sketch as part of the Guest Star Service I have on my site. Finally, #949 was more or less "by the book" - in that I knew what I wanted to say. #950 initially started out as a toon about Jonah's fellow castaway leaving him a note that 'he's gone Christmas shopping' or something to that effect. I like the caption I came up with for the finalized toon much, much better.

Enjoy 'em! Lord knows, there's more.... :)

PCW #944 - 946

Sorry - I've been neglecting the sketch updates. Here are the latest... more to come soon.

Fist colored

I'm probably the only major Iron Fist fan. For those who don't know, Iron Fist is a largely underused Marvel character.

Folsom Prison Blues...

I love working with very simple backgrounds in my 'toons - they are minimal, but often do a good job setting up the atmosphere. There is something to be said for simplicity in design - but the main reason I love to use them is that I hate
drawing detailed backgrounds. ;)
